Can the speaker of the House of Representatives really disinvite the POTUS from the SOTU? Personally, I am in favor of this...
Oh, yeah:

Shit’s fucked.

The Constitution just says the President “ shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
It doesn’t say they have to do it in person.

Facing Trump’s Tantrum, Pelosi Takes Away the TV
Jennifer Rubin, WAPO
You wonder why in the world Democrats ever considered replacing her. She knows she has power, she willingly and skillfully deploys it, and, as she has said, as a mother of 5 children, knows how to handle a toddler’s meltdown. She also knows what Trump craves most — attention and TV cameras.

A constitutional amendment forcing all State of the Union addresses to be in writing only.

Congress has to extend an invitation to the president to deliver his address in front of congress. Up until now we haven't had a fucking toddler as president, so there was never any need to not extend an invitation.

In fact, if you read the letter, Pelosi points that out specifically.
EDIT: Ugh that went full Kinja. Here is a link to the letter.
On January it was my privilege as Speaker to invite you to deliver the State of the Union address on January 29th. The Constitution calls for the President to from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union. During the 19th Century and up until the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, these annual State of the Union messages were delivered to Congress in writing. And since the start of modern budgeting in Fiscal Year 1977, a State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown.

I, for one, find the surreal nature of Trump speeches to be highly entertaining. What else ya gonna do on a Tuesday night in January?
Also, he’s starting to get real weird, and I’m waiting for him to do something truly bizarre.

Like actually lose his mind? A breakdown?
He is a fascinating character at some level, and I expect people will make money for many years writing books about his time in office.
I am tired of Donald Trump incessantly chumming the water, then bellyaching about all the sharks who want to chew him up.

They should do it with one condition. TSA has to provide security wiht only 1 checkpoint and 4 screeners . If its good enough for the public it should be good enough for W ashington, no?

T echnically, yes. We’ll see if the trumpster has anything on her like he does on Graham. And I had that truck - but in charcoal, with the base sealed beam lights and chrome rings on the wheels. Loved it.

Yes, there’s no constitutional requirement that the President deliver the State of the Union as an address to Congress, or even as a speech at all. He has to give a report, but it can be in any format down to just a typed document sent over via courier. The Capitol is under the jurisdiction of Congress, and the House chamber is specifically under the jurisdiction of the House, so he does have to be invited in (the same way the Speaker can’t just waltz into the White House and hold a public event in the East Room without asking the President). The Senate could still, if they wanted to, invite him to come address just them, in their own chamber, but that would be kind of lame in comparison, and he would still have to submit a transcript of that address to the House for it to count as a State of the Union, since their members wouldn’t be there to hear it in person.

So Mrs. Pelosi has Mr. Trump by the base of his television antenna, sounds like. As my brother said, Mr. Trump throws a temper tantrum and Grandma takes away his television.

In this case, pretty much. The State of the Union is a pretty powerful platform. I mean, he could do an address from the Oval Office, or from the Cross Hall (which seems to be a pretty popular spot for those), or hold a public event elsewhere, but it won’t be an official SoU, even if the same topics are still covered.
Unusual in modern times, but the tradition of the President grandstanding in front of a joint session of Congress for the SoU is relatively recent, basically coinciding with the arrival of modern mass media.
One of the ironies of our Constitution, I’ve often thought, is that the only way the Framers were able to fix the Articles of Confederation is by making our government more similar in structure to the British government we had just rebelled against. Perhaps out of a self-conscious recognition of that, some Presidents (eg, Thomas Jefferson) absolutely refused to do a State of the Union speech and just sent a written report to Congress, out of fear that such an address would be too similar in appearance to the British monarch’s Speech from the Throne (almost always given by the Governor General in the 15 realms that aren’t the UK) .

You sound like you know a great deal more about all of this than I do or I would. Personally? While it doesn’t compare to Mitch McConnell denying a hearing for over a year to Merrick Garland for the SCOTUS, I think it’s a loud, hot, stinging slap across the face by Mrs. Pelosi to Mr. Trump and retaliating by not allowing her to leave town for a week while the government is shut down doesn’t seem to me to be much of a comeback. I loathe that man.
